Gambling Addiction, also known as Gambling Disorder, is characterized by the compulsive urge to gamble despite harmful consequences, such as financial loss, relationship problems, and emotional distress.

  • Signs & Symptoms:
    • Preoccupation with gambling (e.g., constantly planning the next bet).
    • Difficulty controlling or cutting back on gambling.
    • Chasing losses (gambling more to recover previous losses).
    • Lying to conceal the extent of gambling.
    • Risking important relationships or job opportunities.
  • Causes & Risk Factors: Genetics, social environment, personality traits (impulsivity), co-occurring disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety), and accessibility of gambling opportunities.
  • Treatment: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), group support (e.g., Gamblers Anonymous), financial counseling, medication (for co-occurring conditions), and family therapy.
